HMVET Gives Back During Military Appreciation Month

Tags
In honor of Military Appreciation Month (May), Hormel Foods signed up for Operation Homefront and its Holiday Meals for Military program. Members of our employee resource group Hormel Military Veterans Engagement Team (HMVET) pitched in as well for a May 18 drive-through event that benefited 460 military families in Plain City, Utah.

Chris Lea, operations manager for flavor and spice; Aaron Dooley, production manufacturing manager for grocery products and the Compleats® brand; and JD Dalton, customer business manager for Retail sales; packed bags of our products for families with a parent who is being deployed. More than 7,000 bags of groceries and 30 pallets of beverages — the equivalent of $250,000 worth of food and drink — were distributed at the event. In addition, families received gift cards to purchase groceries and filled their vehicles with donated items at Kent’s Market, another sponsor of Holiday Meals for Military.

Operation Homefront’s Holiday Meals for Military has provided meals to more than 750,000 military family members since the program began in 2010. The project started after a friend of the charity was in a supermarket line behind a young military family. The family didn’t have enough money to pay for the groceries needed for Thanksgiving, so the gentleman who was next in line paid the difference. He then reached out to Operation Homefront to help launch a program to distribute free meal kits to military families.
