Relief Procurement Managers are the main link between hog producers and the company.  They procure high quality hogs in a designated territory according to Hormel Foods guidelines in the most cost-effective manner possible.  They are responsible for keeping the company and producers updated on market changes, scheduling trucks to the facilities, interpreting markets and evaluating livestock as they come in.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Purchasing hogs that meet Hormel Foods high standards at the lowest possible cost.
  • Utilizing technology to demonstrate to producers where opportunities exist for them to improve their business.
  • Managing contractual relationships with producers.
  • Encouraging producers to continually up-grade their hogs through feeding programs, environmental changes, and genetic programs.
  • Making sure all hogs are handled properly and animal welfare guidelines are used.
  • Meeting all Packers and Stockyard requirements while weighing and pricing hogs.

TRAINING:  New Relief Procurement Managers will partner with experienced Livestock Buyers to develop the skills and expertise necessary to provide the Company with excellent raw materials.  New LPS will typically begin their career in Austin, MN or Fremont, NE.  Seminars at our corporate headquarters in Austin, MN will include presentations by our different divisions to increase product knowledge, company knowledge, and leadership skills.

ADVANCEMENT:  Successful Relief Procurement Managers will advance to positions of great responsibility in the procurement area, such as a Procurement Area Manager. Additional opportunities may exist in different departments, facilities, or subsidiaries. Hormel Foods’ promote-from-within philosophy rewards outstanding performance with rapid advancement.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Preferred candidates should possess a strong livestock or agricultural background and a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Agricultural Business, or Meat Science (or a related field) with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA requirement.  A requirement of this position is to be a citizen or national of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, or have authorization to work in the United States.
