The Specialty Foods division of Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE: HRL) has partnered with the Cancer Nutrition Consortium, to provide cancer patients with nutritional offerings for their specific, individual needs during cancer treatment.

The Cancer Nutrition Consortium is an innovative collaboration among some of the most notable cancer centers, chefs, and nutritional experts, focusing on nutritional concerns of patients undergoing cancer treatment.

“This is a very unique partnership between academia, medicine and manufacturer,” said Chet S. Rao,
Ph.D., Hormel Specialty Foods business development manager. “What we are doing is working with the organizations that know the specialized nutritional needs cancer patients require and helping to make and produce food that meets those needs. This aligns with the Specialty Foods division’s priorities of providing food items for activity, performance and recovery.”

“Hormel Foods is an outstanding corporate citizen that understands the important mission of the Cancer Nutrition Consortium” said Bruce Moskowitz, physician and chairman of the Consortium and of the Bruce and Marsha Moskowitz Foundation. “One of our first priorities was to find a partner who could help produce delicious food products from specially developed recipes designed to meet the specific needs of cancer patients while undergoing treatment. Hormel Foods will be the first food company of its kind to produce food products based on recipes designed with the specific nutritional needs of cancer patients in mind.”

The Hormel Foods products developed in conjunction with the Cancer Nutrition Consortium will be made available on the Hormel Foods health foods site at www.homecarenutrition.com. Consumers will have the ability to order special nutrition products, with free home delivery, directly to their door. The products will also be available for order on the Cancer Nutrition Consortium website soon. Hormel Foods Specialty Foods division offers a broad line of products like Thick & Easy® food and beverage thickeners, Med Pass® 2.0 fortified nutritional shakes and Healthy Shot® protein supplement beverages, for those with special nutritional needs. Previously, these products were primarily sold at nursing homes and hospitals.

About the Cancer Nutrition Consortium

The Cancer Nutrition Consortium, founded with generous support from Jeremy Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Delaware North Companies and owner of the Boston Bruins, is an innovative collaboration among some of the most notable cancer centers, chefs and nutritional experts, focusing on nutritional concerns of patients undergoing cancer treatment including chemotherapy and radiation. The Consortium’s mission is to raise awareness of the importance of food, taste and nutrition issues for cancer patients undergoing treatment, particularly radiation and chemotherapy, and to improve patient quality of life.
The Consortium was launched following a landmark study of the nutritional needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment conducted in collaboration with seven major medical centers across the country including New York University Clinical Cancer Center, Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at John Hopkins, University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, and the Cedars-Sinai/Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The study focused on patient preferences and issues related to patients’ ability to eat and drink while undergoing cancer treatment.
In addition, top chefs — including Master Chefs Ron Desantis and Roland Henin — participated in the effort, with support from the Culinary Institute of America, Delaware North Companies, Rich Products as well as the culinary teams from each of the cancer centers. Recipes, access to advice from chefs and nutritional experts, tips and information for caregivers is available on the Cancer Nutrition Consortium’s website at www.cancernutritionconsortium.org
